Stage 02 · Your own voice Lesson 1 of 3

Where your "shoulds" came from

Trace your beliefs about success and work back to family, school, culture, workplaces, and the places you grew up.

Read it instead

Lesson one. Where your "shoulds" came from. Trace your beliefs about success and work back to family, school, culture, workplaces, and the places you grew up. A "should" is a rule about how you ought to live that came from somewhere else: "I should have a stable job by now", "I should be further along". Most were planted early, by family, school, culture and work, before you could choose. A should isn't wrong because it was handed to you. But while it runs unchecked, it speaks for you. Naming where each one came from turns it from a fact into a choice. Why it matters. You can't express what's truly yours while old voices speak through you. Finding them gives your own voice room. For example. "I should never quit" may sound like a parent who stayed in one job for forty years. Or: "I should post every day" may sound like the internet, not like you. Where this leads. Stage 2 clears the noise, so you can hear what's really yours. This lesson finds the voices. Hold on to this. Most of what you think you want was planted before you could choose. That doesn't make it wrong. It makes it worth checking.

Hold on to this

Most of what you think you want was planted before you could choose. That doesn't make it wrong. It makes it worth checking.

The lesson

A "should" is a rule about how you ought to live that came from somewhere else: "I should have a stable job by now", "I should be further along". Most were planted early, by family, school, culture and work, before you could choose.

A should isn't wrong because it was handed to you. But while it runs unchecked, it speaks for you. Naming where each one came from turns it from a fact into a choice.

Why it matters

You can't express what's truly yours while old voices speak through you. Finding them gives your own voice room.

Where this leads

  1. See
  2. Heal
  3. Gather
  4. Trust
  5. Express

Stage 2 clears the noise, so you can hear what's really yours. This lesson finds the voices.

For example

  • "I should never quit" may sound like a parent who stayed in one job for forty years.

  • "I should post every day" may sound like the internet, not like you.

A line from RumiClose
Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I'll meet you there.
Rumi, tr. Coleman Barks

In plain words

Step past the rules you were handed about what's right for you. In that open space, you can meet yourself honestly.

For this lesson

Your shoulds are someone's ideas of right and wrong. Past them is the field where your own voice is.

Your practice · about 5 min

The should inventory. Write ten shoulds about success and work, fast, without judging. Beside each one, write whose voice it sounds like.

Why it mattersOnce you know whose voice it is, it's a choice again: keep it, or let it go.

01

Ten shoulds, about success and work.

  1. 1
  2. 2
  3. 3
02

Whose voice does each one sound like?

Beside each one on your list, write

  • Family
  • School
  • Culture
  • Work
  • Mine

ThenNotice how few are marked Mine. That's not wrong. It's worth checking.
