Stage 01 · Beyond your title Lesson 1 of 2

Your expertise is not your job title

See that true expertise is a mix of experience, skill, and perspective.

Read it instead

Lesson one. Your expertise is not your job title. See that true expertise is a mix of experience, skill, and perspective. Your job title says what you were hired to do. Your expertise is wider: everything you've lived, the skills you've built, and the way you see things. That mix is what people really come to you for. Here's a simple test. There's what people pay you for, and there's what people come to you for without being asked: over coffee, in a message, after the meeting. The second one is usually closer to your truth, because nobody trained you to be good at it. Why it matters. General knowledge is everywhere now; anyone can look it up. What people come to you for is a mix only you carry. Authentic expression starts with seeing it. For example. Paid to manage projects. Asked, again and again, how to stay calm when a boss is angry. Or: Paid as an accountant. Asked by every friend how to talk about money with a partner. Where this leads. The first step: see the real size of what you know. Everything else in the course builds on it. Hold on to this. What people pay you for and what people come to you for are often two different things. The second one is closer to your truth.

Hold on to this

What people pay you for and what people come to you for are often two different things. The second one is closer to your truth.

The lesson

Your job title says what you were hired to do. Your expertise is wider: everything you've lived, the skills you've built, and the way you see things. That mix is what people really come to you for.

Here's a simple test. There's what people pay you for, and there's what people come to you for without being asked: over coffee, in a message, after the meeting. The second one is usually closer to your truth, because nobody trained you to be good at it.

Why it matters

General knowledge is everywhere now; anyone can look it up. What people come to you for is a mix only you carry. Authentic expression starts with seeing it.

Where this leads

  1. See
  2. Heal
  3. Gather
  4. Trust
  5. Express

The first step: see the real size of what you know. Everything else in the course builds on it.

For example

  • Paid to manage projects. Asked, again and again, how to stay calm when a boss is angry.

  • Paid as an accountant. Asked by every friend how to talk about money with a partner.

In plain words

You may look like one small person, but you carry a whole world: everything you've lived, learned and seen.

For this lesson

Your job title is the small form. What people come to you for is the whole world behind it.

Your practice · about 5 min

Write two lists side by side: what you've been paid for, and what people ask you about without paying. Then name the thread that runs through the second list.

Why it mattersSide by side, the lists show the value you carry that your title never mentions.

02

Two lists, side by side.

What I've been paid for

What people ask me about, unpaid

ThenLook at the second list. That's closer to your truth.

03

Now finish the sentence: what links your second list?

People come to me because I help them .
