Authority Building, ExplainedLesson 1 of 85 min

Why authority

In plain words

Authority means being known, trusted and found by the people who need what you know. Your next client decides who to trust before they ever call you, so the deciding happens online, long before the first conversation.

01

Found. Trusted. Known.

Authority isn't a title or a follower count. It's three things that happen in the mind of someone who needs you. Check yourself honestly: no one sees your answers but you.

  1. FoundSearch your topic and your name. Would a stranger find you?

  2. TrustedWould what they find show how you think, clearly enough to trust?

  3. KnownWould they see you again next week, and remember you?

Answer the three questions.

02

The journey before the call.

Follow one client from a question to your door. Notice how much happens before you hear from them.

  1. A question A client has a problem, and a question about it.
  2. A search They search for it, often late at night, often on their phone.
  3. An AI answer They ask an AI assistant what to do, and who knows about it.
  4. Your name, again They come across your post or video, then see your name again a week later.
  5. The check They look at your profile and your website. Is this person the real thing?
  6. The call They get in touch, already half decided.

By the time they call, your content has done the convincing. Or someone else's has.

03

Two experts. Same qualifications.

You can't try an expert before you choose one, so people choose the one whose thinking they can see. Which would you call?

Expert A

  • Fully qualified, years of experience
  • A directory listing and a phone number
  • Last post: two years ago

Expert B

  • Fully qualified, years of experience
  • Articles answering the questions clients ask
  • Short videos every week, explained clearly
  • A point of view you can feel

An illustration: two made-up experts.

04

Referrals still need it.

A recommendation gets you looked up. What happens next depends on what they find. Choose one.

  1. A friend recommends you"You should talk to them."
  2. They look you upYour name, your topic, an AI answer
  3. They callThey've seen how you think. Trust has started.
  4. They keep lookingNothing to go on. The next name gets the call.

Questions people ask

I get all my work from referrals. Do I need this?

Referrals start the conversation; your presence finishes it. Most referred clients look you up before they call, and what they find decides whether they do.

Isn't authority only for big names?

No. Authority is relative to the people you serve. To a client in your area or niche, the expert who explains things clearly and shows up consistently is the authority.

How long does it take?

Honestly, months, not days. Each week adds to the last, which is why consistency matters more than any single post.

Is this the same as being an influencer?

No. Influence is about reach; authority is about trust in what you know. You don't need a huge audience, just the right people seeing your expertise again and again.

Quiz

Check what stuck.
